Flight 2 Now Live!

Editor's Intro

Flight 2 is landing in times that are, we are constantly reminded, unprecedented. We are surrounded–in the news, on social media–by reminders that things are bad, and unlikely to get better soon. It’s no wonder, then, that when we started reading through the submissions in our first open call, we noticed that many of the works focused on apocalypses.

Writing is a way of working through our anxieties about the world, and in the pieces selected for Flight 2, we see authors who are working through apocalypses large and small. We enjoyed the process of thinking about how each submitted piece might “talk” to the others, and how together they build a small world of their own.

Our first selected piece is “Polecatz,” by the incredible Michael Czyzniejewski, a true end of the world story that still manages to bring humor and perspective. Next, we have Jack Bedell’s poem “Sillage,” which meditates on our tendency to ignore the warning signs of future breakdown. For this issue’s Brewer’s Choice, Carma Lynn Park brings us “Recipe for a Spell: To Heal a Migraine,” which considers how physical pain can bring an individual’s whole world to a stop. We end Flight 2 with “I Need a Sign,” an essay from Ben Shahon about loving a bad sports team, and thinking through the long, unlikely road to success.

So welcome back. Pull up a stool, order a drink, and get reading. We promise, the world will only end for as long as it takes for you to want to read each piece again. Welcome to Flight 2. We’re glad you’re here.
